‘August: Osage County’ and Misty Upham Reap Positive Reviews

On Monday night, August: Osage County premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and the reviews of the film are positive. An adaptation of Tracy Letts' award-winning play, the film stars Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, and Ewan McGregor, and features Blackfeet actress Misty Upham in a supporting role. Scott Foundas, chief film critic for Variety, writes that "as a faithful filmed record of Letts’ play, one could have scarcely hoped for better."

In order to get the three-hour play down to a movie's running time, Letts had to trim some of the script; according to Tim Robey of The Telegraph, the "main casualty of this compression is the character of Johnna (Misty Upham), the Cheyenne Indian housekeeper that Bev hires both to cook and give him someone to talk to. Johnna's presence supplied a quietly astonishing finale on stage."

Nonetheless, Variety reviewer Foundas deemed Upham's brief performance memorable, writing that "Letts and Wells [give] even the most seemingly incidental character (like the fine Native American actress Misty Upham as Vi’s live-in caretaker) a grace note or two."

August: Osage County will see a limited release on Christmas day.
