Celebrate spring at the Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur, Oklahoma. A variety of fun, educational, and interactive activities are planned in March and April—from an egg hunt to art classes—to commemorate springtime.
Three Sisters Spring Celebration, March 10-23
The Three Sisters Spring Festival is going on right now and ends Sunday, March 23. The annual festival will feature many fun outdoor activities, with an emphasis on the cultural connection to horticulture.
During this festival, homage is given to the “Three Sisters” (corn, beans and squash), as well as the rebirth and rejuvenation of spring. An ancient method of gardening, “Three Sisters” uses an intercropping system to grow corn, beans and squash simultaneously. It provides long-term soil fertility and healthy crops.
Horticulture-related activities including Pashofa and Three Sisters Stew sampling, gardening demonstrations, a play set in the garden and interactive cultural demonstrations will take place under the arbors in the living village. Planned demonstrations include cane flutes, blow guns, gardening and finger weaving. Make and take activities include cornhusk dolls, pinch pots and face painting.
A Stomp Dance demonstration and storytelling will be conducted each day. Guests will be able to take part in traditional games such as marbles, chunkey and stickball. Art classes will be offered Monday to Saturday at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the Aapisa’ Art Gallery.
