Watch Neil Young Sing ‘Mother Earth’ as Tar Sands Mining Ravages Her

Between January 12 and 19, Neil Young played four concerts supporting the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation Legal Defense Fund, which is challenging oil companies and the Canadian government over the practice of tar sands extraction on tribal lands. The clip below features Young's live rendition of "Mother Earth" from the mini-tour's final night, at Jack Singer Hall, in Calgary. The aerial footage of tar sands devastation comes from Petropolis, a documentary film that was shown, in part, at the concerts. (Scroll down to see a longer extract from Petropolis.) The concerts were coordinated with Honor the Treaties, a slogan Young has adopted in his Twitter statements aimed at Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Canadian government.

"Mother Earth" was featured on Young's Ragged Glory album. Here's the 15-minute "condensed" version of Petropolis (directed by Peter Mettler for Greenpeace) that was shown at the concerts:
