Wes Studi Wins Distinguished Artist Award in Tulsa

On Sunday, actor Wes Studi, Cherokee, famous for his work in such films as The Last of the Mohicans and Avatar, was given the Distinguished Artist Award at the Tulsa Awards for Theater Excellence (TATE).

In his acceptance speech, Studi thanked the theater community of Tulsa, saying "this is where I began," according to Tulsa World. "I wouldn't be here without you. And I wouldn't be able to hold this award above my head and say, 'My God! I'm a real freaking actor!'"

During a question-and answer session before the awards, Studi addressed a range of topics, including the cinematic controversy du jour in Indian country — Johnny Depp's portrayal of Tonto in The Lone Ranger. "This is a comic book," he said. "The Lone Ranger never existed. Tonto never existed. So there's no reason to think in terms of tribal authenticity, or that … that awful bird on the head."
