Willamette University’s 12th Social Pow Wow Honors Native Educators

The 12th Annual Social Pow Wow at Willamette University brought tribes together to honor Native American educators and celebrate their history. April Campbell, Oregon’s first Indian education specialist was also honored.

“It’s important because native people have a long, rich history in Oregon and the Willamette Valley,” said Felicia Garcia who co-coordinated Saturday's event. “It’s to honor that history.”

It was Garcia’s and Sara Cordes second year planning the event. They said that there were 23 vendors in all, and some had to be turned away.

“It’s a good gathering of nations. There are tribes from Oregon, Washington and all over,” Cordes told the Statesman Journal.

Vendors offered handcrafted jewelry and products lined the perimeter of the gymnasium in the Sparks Center as dancers circled the center of the floor and drummers gathered in scattered groups, the Journal said.

The event featured both intertribal and competitive dances. A men’s grass dance contest was held and there was also a women’s fancy shawl dance contest.

The event’s Master of Ceremonies was Bob Tom; the Arena Director was Dietz Peters and the host drum was Dancing Spirit Drum.

The pow wow was sponsored by the Willamette University Native American Enlightenment Association, the Associated Students of Willamette University, Willamette University Native American Advisory Council and Willamette University Office of Multicultural Affairs.
