Actor Jonathan Banks, widely known for his role as Mike Ehrmantraut in the award-winning AMC Series Breaking Bad, has joined the growing chorus of celebrity voices who are calling for the Washington football team to change its name.
During an interview on the online series Speakeasy with Paul F. Tompkins, Banks, who was born in Washington, D.C., argued that the number of people who are offended by the name shouldn’t matter.
“We’ve got to change the name, dude,” Banks told Tompkins. “Even if there are two American Indians out there that don’t want to be called Redskins you got to change the name – just change the name. … If somebody’s offended by it, you know, then change it. It’s not that big a deal.”
Team owner Dan Snyder said he will “NEVER” change the name. In June, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office cancelled six of the team’s seven trademarks after the team name was found to be “disparaging to Native Americans.”
In November, a federal court judge ruled Dan Snyder has the right to sue the five Native Americans who won the case against him earlier this year.
