University of Louisville Senior Shoni Schimmel was recognized by ESPNW and the American Athletic Conference as Player of the Week on Monday.
Schimmel finished last week averaging 27.0 points per game, with 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists for Louisville as the Cardinals improved to 8-0.
Last week, against Houston, Schimmel scored 25 points while going 7 of 11 from behind the 3-point line; and earning a season-high of eight rebounds and five assists. Louisville beat the Cougars 93-52.
Two days ago, Schimmel was off to a rough start in the Cardinals game against Memphis — Shoni missed her first four shots. So, she took a time out.
"When I sat down on the bench, I kind of evaluated the whole situation and I thought, 'I'm better than that',” Schimmel told ESPN. “So I just went back out there.”
About three minutes after her pep-talk on the bench, her impact on the court improved. She nailed six three-pointers in just four minutes, making a total of eight 3-point field goals in the first half. That’s one shot shy of the NCAA record of 9 3-pointers in a row. Louisville went on to win it 88-61.
