Jude Schimmel, Umatilla, just announced she has signed with the University of Louisville to play basketball beginning next fall. This will reunite her with her sister Shoni, already established as a star at Louisville after just finishing her freshman season on a team that played in the NCAA women’s basketball tournament and reached the Sweet Sixteen round before losing to Gonzaga University.
Jude finished her senior year of basketball at Franklin High School in Portland, Oregon by playing in the Northwest Shootout, a game featuring the best players from western Oregon versus the best from western Washington. That game was won by Washington by a score of 103-101, but Jude was a catalyst for the Oregon team, scoring 18 points with 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. She was also named First Team All-State in Oregon despite playing on a team that didn’t reach the final rounds of the tournament, usually a pre-requisite in being selected to the All-State team.
Jude is a small guard, listed at 5’6”, but plays a complete game, often out-rebounding much larger players. She scored over 30 points in 8 games this past season with a high game of 51 points. Her season statistics were beyond impressive, she averaged 28.4 points, 9.4 rebounds, 7.2 steals, 5.6 assists, and 2 blocks per game, an astounding compilation of statistics, indicative of the well-rounded game she plays.
The combination of two American Indian sisters playing at a major NCAA Division I university such as Louisville is unique and will provide Indian country with a team to follow the next three years.
