The Dakota Dunes Open presented by SaskTel, part of the PGA Tour Canada's inaugural season, has added Native PGA Tour player and current NBC and Golf Channel Golf Analyst Notah Begay III, Navajo/Isleta/San Felipe, to the field .
Begay, a four-time winner on the PGA Tour, will be in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan for the entire tournament week of July 1–7 involved both as a player and in community events. The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority, the title sponsor for the Dakota Dunes Open, has provided Begay with a sponsor exemption to play in the tournament.
"We are extremely excited to have Notah Begay at our event," said tournament executive chairman Hugh Vassos. Begay will participate in a number of special GOLFEST events including the Pro-Celebrity Drive the River Challenge at River Landing, Sponsor Pro-Ams, the PGA Tour Canada Inaugural Luncheon at the Dakota Dunes Casino, and a Junior Golf Clinic for First Nations youth. "We are also thrilled that Notah will play in the tournament and we know a lot of golf fans are going to come out to watch him. Notah's participation elevates the profile of our Saskatchewan event as one of the top stops on the new tour," added Vassos.
"The Dakota Dunes Open has garnered an excellent reputation over the years and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to compete," said Begay. "I'm also excited to engage members of the First Nations community and its youth in an effort to promote my message of educational pursuit and personal health."
This is shaping up to be a busy summer for Begay playing golf, who's already working full-time covering the sport for NBC and Golf Channel. On August 28 Tiger Woods and other star pro golfers will join Begay at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, New York for the NB3 Foundation Challenge to support obesity and diabetes prevention and leadership development programming for Native American youth.
