One hundred and twenty-six years ago today, Jim Thorpe, whose Indian name was Wa-Tho-Huk ("Bright Path"), was born in Indian Territory. The Sac & Fox Indian would go on to become the "World's Greatest Athlete," and he is still today the best known American Indian athlete.
And he's still in the news headlines, as two of his sons pursue a lawsuit to have his remains moved from Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, to Indian lands in Oklahoma.
Of course his name is still attached to athletic events, his prowess as an athlete unquestioned. There's the Sixth Annual Jim Thorpe Native American 5K Championships on June 29 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as well as the upcoming Jim Thorpe Native American Games June 9-15 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
But today, we remember and celebrate Jim Thorpe the man, who was born 126 years ago. For a collection of videos and other tributes to Wa-Tho-Huk, click here.
