Change Mascot Name

Rejected “Change the Mascot” Ads Welcomed in Denver

After two Washington, D.C., radio stations refused to air radio ads put out by the Oneida Indian Nation last week, the “Change the Mascot” campaign is having better luck in Denver.

According to a news release, the ad called “Legacy,” which features Ray Halbritter, Oneida Nation representative and CEO, will air this Saturday and Sunday on Denver’s KDSP-FM.

"Across the country we have witnessed a surge in support for changing the Washington football team's racist mascot," Halbritter said in a statement. "This issue is not going away. We will continue to call for Mr. Snyder to do the right thing. We will not be silent mascots."

The radio ad urges Washington’s NFL team and its owner, Dan Snyder, to change the team’s offensive name. In the ad, Halbritter encourages Snyder to stand on the ”right side” of history.

“By changing his team's name, Mr. Snyder can create a better historical legacy for himself—one of tolerance and mutual respect, not of racial epithets.”

As part of its grassroots campaign, the Oneida Indian Nation will continue to air similar advertisements in Washington and in all cities where the team plays road games throughout the NFL season. The ad's broadcast comes before the "Redskins" play the Broncos at Sports Authority Field at Mile HIgh in Denver this Sunday.

The Nation has released a series of ads in its name-change effort. One of them, called “Inspire,” aired on KGMZ-FM, the flagship radio station of the Oakland Raiders.
