Thompson Brothers Play First Home Game: Inaugural Season Begins For The Georgia Swarm!

Jan 9th, 2016 marks the first home game in the inaugural season of the first professional indoor lacrosse team in Georgia history. 9,087 enthusiastic fans attended the home game and showed their support as the Georgia Swarm took down the Toronto Rock with a 12-7 final.

Member of the Onondaga Nation, #2 Forward Miles Thompson told ICTMN, “I thought the crowd brought it tonight! They gave us that energy that we needed, coming out it was something we were expecting because our people behind the scenes were telling us that, so the crowd helped us out.”

Georgia added no.1 overall pick and 2015 Tewaaraton Trophy winner, Lyle Thompson during the 2015 NLL Draft reuniting him with his brother Miles Thompson, each co-recipients of 2014 Tewaaraton Award.

#4 rookie Lyle Thompson commented to ICTMN, “I didn’t really know what to expect with it being the first box lax game which a lot of people aren’t familiar with around here…but they came out it was a pretty big crowd and that obviously excites us.”

ICTMN asked Lyle about expectations for the season:  “We obviously have high expectations and we’re looking to win our champion cup, we’re not going to sell ourselves short for anything. I think we got the right team a great coaching staff, everything around us, everyone who put this team together, it’s professional and what we need to win.”

The team is also home for several other incredible Native athletes- rookie #83 Randy Staats (Mohawk Nation), Joe Maracle (Cayuga), and #93 Johnny Powless (Mohawk).

Forward Johnny Powless and rookie forward Randy Staats dominated the score board for the Swarm. Powless, from Six Nations, Ontario, scored the first home goal in GA Swarm history. When asked how it felt to score the first home goal, Powless replied, “It was awesome!”  Powless was named 1st Star for bringing in the most goals for the Swarm with a total of four, three of which he nailed in the first quarter. #83 Randy Staats, also from Six Nations, Ontario was named 2nd Star for his three goals and four assists that helped boost the team to victory.

The next Swarm game will be 2:05 pm January 17 vs. the New England Black Wolves to be played on Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Field at the Infinite Energy Arena in Gwinnett, GA.
