Last week, the ESPN sports news show Outside the Lines focused on the controversy surrounding the team name and mascot of the NFL's Washington Redskins. Host Bob Ley led a discussion that involved ICTMN contributor Gyasi Ross, Oneida Indian Nation Representative Ray Halbritter, The Nation sports editor Dave Zirin (edgeofsports.com), and Evan Redmon, editor in chief of the Redskins fan site sonofwashington.com.
Redmon later tweeted, "I felt like I showed up at a gun fight with a butter knife lol," which is not a bad description. Though some viewers criticized Ross for use of "the N-word," the very fact that it's usually called "the N-word" and is considered taboo is relevant to the conversation about Redskins — if we can't say "the N-word" why do we argue about "the R-word"?
