Nomlaki Video Addresses How to ‘Speak American’

After the uproar caused by the multi-lingual Coca-Cola commercial and the trending of the #speakamerican hashtag, Cody Pata, of the Paskenta Nomlaki tribe, had something to say about speaking American.

“The hashtag #speakamerican trended like cancer across social media in response to Coca-Cola’s Super Bowl commercial which featured ‘America the Beautiful’ sung in different languages,” Pata said in an email to Indian Country Today Media Network. “This video is my native language response on how to ‘speak American.’”

Pata has been impressed with the response to his video, which has more than 9,300 views on YouTube. What has most surprised him though is the fact that many people don’t realize native languages are not extinct.

“I have even received comments which expressed that people thought the Nomlaki language was extinct or gone,” he said. “We would beg to differ.”

In his comments Pata says he is “one of the first of the new generation of speakers.”
