Schilling, UNCC Native Students to Address Pocahontas Dance Incident

Members of the UNCC Native American Student Organization (NASO) are inviting students, faculty and the public to a lecture on Wednesday (April 30) regarding cultural misappropriation in response to the recent "Pocahontas Dance" during a recent Greek Week event called "Air Band Dance." During the event, members of the Sigma Kappa Sorority performed a Pocahontas dance while dressed in costume.

The guest speaker will be ICTMN’s own Vincent Schilling, Akwesasne Mohawk, who will discuss cultural misappropriation and why it causes concern among members of the Native American community.

According to Evan Mathis, Cherokee, a UNCC student and NASO Vice-President who has created a UNCC Cultural Appropriation Facebook Event Page, the students are looking forward to the visit from Schilling.

“He is an expert on the subject, and we are very fortunate to be able to have him on our campus. Following Vincent's lecture, there will be an open forum for which anyone attending the lecture can voice their opinions or ask any questions that they might have regarding this subject in a calm and respectful manner. Anyone from the community is more than welcome to attend,” writes Mathis.

Thus far, representatives from the Sigma Kappa administration have confirmed they will be in attendance and will foster efforts to invite members of the local Sigma Kappa Chapter.

The lecture and presentation will begin at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, April 30th and will take place at the UNCC’s College of Health and Human Service bldg. in room 145.
