France Bans Access to Sacred Mountain Said to Be Mayan Doomsday Refuge

France made the decision November 16 to ban access to Pic de Bugarach, a mountain which is said by Mayan doomsday believers to be a safe haven for when December 21 hits.

“We are expecting a few visionaries, a few people who believe in this end of the world, but in extremely limited numbers,” Eric Freysselinard, the state’s top representative in the area said in a press release. “We are expecting greater numbers of people who are just curious, but in numbers we cannot determine. Above all, we are expecting lots of journalists.”

There will be about 100 police and firefighters tightly controlling the roads to the village at the foot of the mountain come December.

Those who may still try to get to Pic de Bugarach will do so because they believe an alien spacecraft will emerge from the 4,035-foot summit to carry them to safety.

Scientists have said the Mayan calendar ending on December 21 doesn’t mean the end of times, it was simply the ending of one of their calendar’s 13 baktuns, a 400 year cycle, and the beginning of a new one.
