11/28/08 – Tribe gets OK to rebury ancestors’ remains

Thanks to a gesture of neighborliness from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, a San Gabriel Indian tribe will be able to rebury the remains of some of its ancestors after more than 50 years.

In the mid 1950s, the remains of about three Gabrielino Indians were unearthed at the Chilao Campground in the San Gabriel Mountains during a construction project. Those remains eventually wound up at the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles, where they remained in storage until one week ago, when they were repatriated to the Gabrielino/Tongva San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians.
