A word of thanks to Daily Kos for digging up this diamond of conservative fearmongering. Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association posted a column last week titled “Obama Wants to Give America Back to the Indians.”
The twisted logic is that Obama’s endorsement of the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples amounts to an endorsement of Indian rule over the United States of America.
“President Obama wants to give the entire land mass of the United States of America back to the Indians,” Fischer writes. “He wants Indian tribes to be our new overlords.”
It is distressing to again see right-wingers whose hatred of the president is so blinding they will casually throw anyone under the bus so long as it is driving in Obama’s general direction. A month ago, Fox News was taking a swipe at Sitting Bull; now the AFA’s “director of issue analysis” has summoned the ludicrous idea of Native American “overlords.” Fischer concludes that this invented conspiracy between a black President and Native Americans will ultimately be foiled by the Founding Fathers:
“Perhaps [Obama] figures that, as an adopted Crow Indian, he will be the new chief over this revived Indian empire. But for the other 312 million of us, I think we’ll settle for our constitutional ‘We the people’ form of government, thank you very much.”
There’s not much one can say to that, is there? Although the unanimously negative commenters at the AFA’s site are giving it a go. Here’s a good one:
“This article is breathtaking in the audacity of its contempt for any possible reader, in any conceivable universe.”
