Aboriginal Veterans Memorialized in Ottawa Monument

First Nations, Inuit and Métis who have served in the Canadian armed forces over the years finally got their due in Ottawa in 2001, with the unveiling of the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument in Confederation Park.

Aboriginals have used their hunter and warrior skills to serve as snipers and reconnaissance scouts in times of war and have also served in peacetime. The monument, commissioned by the National Aboriginal Veterans Association, is built on traditional aboriginal symbolism, starting with the Thunderbird at the top. Here is an explanation of the parts of the monument.
