Aquinnah Tribe Pushes for Casinos on Martha’s Vineyard Island and in Southeastern Massachusetts

The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah), whose Wampanoag trust lands are located in the southwest portion of Martha’s Vineyard Island, is making strides in its pursuit to develop two casinos—one destination resort in Southeastern Massachusetts and a Class II gaming facility on the Island.

For the mainland resort casino, the Aquinnah Wampanoag Gaming Corporation has teamed up with KMD Consulting of California, the tribe announced in a press release. Martha’s Vineyard Patch reported that KMD is the company behind many Las Vegas and California deals involving the MGM Grand, Planet Hollywood, Bellagio and more. The company is currently partnering with the Menominee Tribe to develop a casino in Wisconsin.

On Sunday, the tribal council voted on the second gaming house. In a 35-27 vote, they approved turning their unfinished community center into a Class II facility featuring bingo and poker, an unidentified source told Martha’s Vineyard Times.

But at least one tribe must ink a deal with Governor Deval Patrick by July 31, otherwise the Southeast Massachusetts casino region will be open to commercial bidders, reported capecodtoday.com.

Thus far, Gov. Patrick’s office has declined to enter into negotiations with the tribe for a license to build a casino on 500 acres of land under agreement in Freetown and Lakeville. Freetown has scheduled a referendum on the Aquinnah Tribe’s casino plans for Tuesday, May 29, 2012, and in Lakeville a similar vote will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2012.

“We have assembled an experienced development, public affairs and legal team that will represent the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe well as we move forward in creating a new economic engine for Southeastern Massachusetts,” said Chairwoman Cheryl Andrews-Maltais in the statement.
