Kids at Chick-fil-A locations nationwide will be now able to read The Berenstain Bears and the Golden Rule while snacking on poultry, a move the book’s creators don’t seem too thrilled with.
The Berenstain family released a statement clarifying its relationship with the restaurant: “Our publisher, HarperCollins, is marketing several of their Berenstain Bears titles through a kids’ meal promotion at Chick-Fil-A scheduled for August. This program was in development for over a year. We were unaware of any controversy involving Chick-Fil-A until July 25th.
“The Berenstain family does not at this time have control over whether this program proceeds or not. We hope those concerned about this issue will direct their comments toward HarperCollins and Chick-Fil-A.”
In 2011 the Berenstain Bears helped the Lakota language make great strides in preservation of the language with a series of 20 episodes and teaching materials dubbed by fluent speakers.
The toy switch coincidentally came soon after a statement from the Jim Henson Company severing ties with Chick-fil-A after its president, Dan Cathy, admitted the company is against gay marriage.
“The Jim Henson Company has celebrated and embraced diversity and inclusiveness for over fifty years and we have notified Chick-Fil-A that we do not wish to partner with them on any future endeavors,” The Jim Henson Company posted on its Facebook page on July 20.
Everyone seems to have an opinion on the stance taken by Chick-fil-A. Gawker recently reported that New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg doesn’t think the business should be blocked because of its views, though he is a supporter of marriage equality.
And Sarah Palin’s recent visit to a Chick-fil-A in Texas had her posing and posting pictures of herself and husband Todd on twitter and Facebook, which Gawker said was a great way to “let everyone know she hates gay people.”
