Cherokee Nation Donates More Than $450,000 to Volunteer Firefighters

The Cherokee Nation will present more than 120 area volunteer fire departments with checks totaling $451,500 at an annual appreciation banquet June 30 ight in Catoosa, Oklahoma.

The tribe will treat the 129 volunteer fire departments to dinner, and Principal Chief Bill John Baker and other tribal leaders will present checks for $3,500 to each department for equipment, fuel or other necessary items to sustain their fire stations and protect people and property in rural areas. Rural fire departments rely heavily on good Samaritans, fundraisers and membership drives to keep stations operating.

Two departments will be named “Volunteer Fire Department of the Year,” and five volunteers will be recognized by the Cherokee Nation as “Volunteer Firefighter of the Year” during the banquet.
