Green Is Mainstream: Honda Accord Wins Green Car of the Year at LA Auto Show

The Honda Accord snagged the title of Green Car of the Year at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Thursday,  beating out four finalists: the Audi A6 TDI, the BMW 328d, the Mazda3 and the Toyota Corolla.

“The diversity of this field of finalists illustrates not only that green has gone mainstream, but also that there is no single approach to achieving ever-higher levels of fuel efficiency and environmental performance,” sad Ron Cogan, editor of the Green Car Journal, which presents the award annually. “There’s something for everyone in this year’s field of finalists.”

The Accord comes in gasoline, gasoline-battery hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. The Environmental Protection Agency rates the Accord four-cylinder version (for combined city and highway driving) at 30 miles per gallon, the hybrid version at 47 mpg and the plug-in hybrid at 46 mpg under gasoline power and 115 mpg-equivalent under hybrid-electric power, reported autonews.com.

Mike Accavitti, an American Honda senior vice president, said more hybrid vehicles are on Honda's horizon. "You are going to see more and more of these hybrid motors coming across our lineup."

Last year, Ford Motor Co.'s Fusion mid-sized sedan earned the coveted title, and prior to that, Honda's natural gas-powered Civic won Green Car of the Year. In 2011, General Motors' plug-in hybrid Chevrolet Volt was named best green car.
