The Cabazon Band of Mission Indians hosted the Cabazon Indio Powwow XXX this past weekend, with 65 tribes participating in the annual event. Sherry Barkas of The Desert Sun reported that the arena at the Fantasy Springs Special Event Center in Indio, California, was filled with more than 450 dancers, with 6,000 people expected to attend.
This marked the 18th year the Cabazons have held the pow wow. “We used to do it twice a year,” Judy Stapp, director of cultural affairs for the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians, told Barkas. “Some of the dancers and their families have been here since we started in 1993, and we have watched their children grow up, and now they bring their children,” Stapp said.
