Canadian Mohawks Get $500,000 from VIA Rail for Education and Capital Improvements

Capital projects and education both will benefit from a $500,000 investment that VIA Rail is making with the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, in Ontario, whose rail line runs through the Natives’ reservation, The Intelligencer reports.

The multiyear funding deal skirts pending land-claims litigation but includes $150,000 in free train tickets for band members, and a potential $25,000 per year more from CN Rail if its promised annual donation to post-secondary education for Tyendinaga youth comes through.

The deal has been in the works since last summer, when talks were launched to address right-of-way issues with the rail line, the newspaper said. The Via money will help build three houses and make repairs along Airport Road.
