Candlelight Vigil in Support of Onondaga Land Rights Tonight

Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation (NOON) invites concerned Central New Yorkers to join a candlelight vigil in support of Onondaga Land Rights on Wednesday, October 10 at 6:00 p.m. in Clinton Square, downtown Syracuse. The vigil precedes the hearing of the Onondaga Land Rights Action at the U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals, scheduled for Friday, October 12 at 9 a.m. in New York City. Members of NOON and the Onondaga Nation will travel to New York City on Thursday for the hearing.
“We want our Onondaga neighbors to know that they have support here in Syracuse,” notes NOON organizer Andy Mager. “Regardless of what the court decides, people here in Central New York understand that our state and nation owe a debt to the Onondaga Nation and we want to work with the Onondaga people for a better future for all in our region.”
NOON organizer and SUNY-ESF student Aya Yamamoto says, “As a young person, a student of environmental biology, and ally of indigenous peoples, I see the Onondaga Land Rights Action as a crucial junction in healing the relationship between human beings and the land. We must achieve redress and justice in order to go down a sustainable path of peace and friendship. It is of the utmost importance that members of my generation step up and take on this task. The time is now.”
Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation is a grassroots organization of Central New Yorkers which promotes understanding of, and respect for, the Onondaga people, history, and culture within the Central New York community. For more information contact NOON at (315) 472-5478 or see PeaceCouncil.net/noon.
