Cherokee Nation Inauguration Ceremony November 6

On November 6, the Cherokee Nation will swear in Bill John Baker as the 26th Principal Chief during an inaugural ceremony at the Sequoyah Schools Place Where They Play, Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

The ceremony will feature Baker taking his oath of office and a performance by the Cherokee National Youth Choir. Former Oklahoma Governor David Walters will serve as master of ceremonies, with the oath administered by Cherokee Nation Supreme Court Justice James G. Wilcoxen.

Marking this as a historic event, Michell Hicks, chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and George Wickliffe, chief of the United Keetoowah Band will join Baker making this the first time all three federally recognized Cherokee tribes join for a Cherokee Nation inaugural ceremony.

“I am excited for the celebration of our inauguration and I look forward to tribal leaders, employees and volunteers coming together and celebrating,” said Baker.

The inauguration is open to the public and immediately following the ceremony the public is invited to mingle with guest and tribal leaders while enjoying a free traditional hog fry. Festivities begin at 2 p.m.
