Cherokee Nation Seeks Ambassadors

Do you know a Cherokee Nation citizen between the ages of 4 and 12 years old? They could compete to become the 2011 Little Cherokee Ambassador, a competition meant to promote Cherokee language and culture by developing leadership and confidence in the tribe’s youngest members.

“The goal is to help build leaders that build our nation,” said Mandy Scott, Little Cherokee Ambassador event coordinator, in a press release. “Participants are inspired to achieve their dreams and become self-sufficient.”

As part of the competition—to be held August 13 at Sequoyah Schools’ Place Where They Play—participants display knowledge of traditional crafts and stories through show and tell, sharing a family story and answering questions about Cherokee language and history.

The competition is being held in conjunction with the 59th Cherokee National Holiday, which has been held since 1953. Several lead ambassadors—a boy and girl from each age of three age groups—will be chosen to represent the nation at events throughout the year.

Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on July 22. Include a copy of the participant’s tribal citizenship card and a brief biography. To request an application contact Scott at 918-207-3841 or
