Cherokee Nation Send Thousands of Valentines to Veterans

In an effort to show their love and support, today and tomorrow the Cherokee Nation will send more than 2,000 handmade valentine cards to the U.S. Veterans of Oklahoma just in time for Valentine's Day on February, 14.

“We try to remember these guys because a lot of them, especially the ones in the nursing homes, are by themselves,” said Rogan Noble, Cherokee Nation Veterans representative. “We try to bring a little happiness to their lives.”

Each year the Cherokee Nation encourages its citizens to participate in "Valentines for Veterans," which is part of the National Salute to Veteran Patients program.

News of the program spread quickly through the community.

According to a press release from the Cherokee Nation, an employee at the Redbird Smith Health Center in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Rachelle Holman, saw Noble’s request for valentine cards as a great opportunity to teach her son about giving back to others. The idea led to the pre-K class at Sallisaw's Liberty Elementary making a dozen cards for Veterans.

“My son, Jace, and I have been working on random acts of kindness, and so he and I worked on it one weekend and thought his friends would really enjoy it too. We asked his teacher and she agreed, so we made valentines in his pre-K class,” Holman said. “One of our best friends just retired after three different tours of duty in Afghanistan. He’s my son’s hero, and so Jace really understands and is excited about this.”

The Cherokee Nation Elder Care and Immersion Charter School also participated in making cards.

Immersion teachers Denise Chaudoin and Nora Birdtail’s kindergarten class used it as a teaching opportunity. Shaudoin said her students love making the cards knowing it is their way of saying “thank you” to veterans.

“To see a child and the look of satisfaction on their face knowing they made something and  gave it to someone out of  appreciation for all they’ve  done– even the crustiest old vet kind of breaks up at that,” Noble said.
