Cocopah Police Chief Attends Training

Longtime law enforcement and Cocopah Tribal Police Chief James Spurgeon was recently chosen as one of 30 law enforcement executives across the United States to attend the 9th Leading by Legacy training hosted by The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).

Spurgeon, who was named Police Chief of the Year by the National Native American Law Enforcement Association in 2009 as reported by yumasun.com, has served in law enforcement for more than 25 years. The last five years have been as the Cocopah Tribal Police Chief.

According to a tribal press release the goals of the “training is to enhance the leadership and management skill set of each training participant and provide strategies to promote leadership development with their own agency.” These are seen as tools that strengthen agency stability and delivery of quality services in the community.

Over the two days, Spurgeon will learn techniques in areas of motivation, managing change, succession planning, and engaging the community. There will also be a focus on accountability and an idea exchange.

Training expenses for attendees are covered by IACP with funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through the Bureau of Justice Assistance, U.S. Department of Justice according to the release.

Spurgeon, who left for the training on February 24, is a graduate of the 237th class of the FBI National Academy Program and a graduate of the FBI and Department of Justice Command College according to yumasuncom.

The IACP is the world’s oldest and largest non-profit membership organization of police executives. It has more than 22,500 members in 108 different countries and members come from international, federal, tribal, state, campus and local agencies.
