County Opposes Ho-Chunk Nation Land-Into-Trust Request

The Sauk County, Wisconsin board denied the Ho-Chunk Nation’s plans for roughly 600 acres surrounding its Wisconsin Dells-Baraboo casino to be placed into trust for an IMAX theater, restaurant, cultural heritage center, strip mall and RV park. The board shot down the plans May 17 in a 23-4 vote opposing the Ho-Chunk Nation land-into-trust application, reported the The Baraboo News Republic.

The plan would have removed the tribe’s responsibility to pay taxes on the land, but county officials said it would cost them about  $700,000 in tax revenue. “We are looking at it from the way it will impact not only Sauk County but other taxing jurisdictions, and then ultimately how it affects individual taxpayers,” county administrator Kathy Schauf told the board, the Republic reported.
