Former 23-year council member for the Seminole Tribe of Florida, David Cypress, plead guilty on April 13 to filing a false income tax return, agreeing to pay $5.46 million to the Internal Revenue Service according to the Sun Sentinel.
Cypress could serve up to three years in prison and will be sentenced August 9. He admitted to underreporting his income for 2007 by $285,000. His plea deal calls for him to pay taxes, interest and penalties from 2003 through 2009, that the IRS says he owes, despite the charges only covering 2007.
The Sun Sentinel also led an investigation into Cypress’ spending while in charge of the Big Cypress reservation on the tribal council that found he had spent more than $160 million in tribal funds between 1999 and 2007, more than all the other council members combined.
