Dolphin struggles to survive in the toxic waters of NYC’s Gowanus Canal

Dolphin Trapped in NYC’s Gowanus Canal (UPDATED)

In recent days, news media outlets have been alight with heartwarming stories about dolphins.

This week multiple news sites have reported the uplifting story about a group of sperm whales that adopted a deformed dolphin in the Atlantic Ocean of the coast of Portugal.

Yesterday ICTMN.com shared a video of a remarkably smart dolphin, which was seemingly seeking help from a group of divers in Hawaii.

Sadly today, reports began this morning that an injured dolphin has been trapped in the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, New York, a known polluted Superfund site.

Authorities and experts are on the scene, but due to the toxicity levels of the water, rescue plans are being held off until after 7 p.m. tonight during high tide.

“Unfortunately, all we can do is watch and wait for the tide to rise, so the animal can get out on its down,” said Robert DiGiovanni, senior biologist at the Riverhead Foundation. “It’s not safe for us to get people in the water.” NYDailyNews.com reported.

The dolphin was last reported by the NYTimes.com's live feed at 1PM as “swimming just beneath her and she spotted blood coming from its dorsal fin.”

UPDATE: The Associated Press has confirmed that the stranded dolphin has died. The dolphin reportedly stopped moving after it breached on a concrete piling, wedged between a rock under the Union Street Bridge around 5:30 p.m. EST.
