Drinking four cups of caffeinated coffee daily reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to recent studies by University of California, Los Angeles researchers, published in the journal Diabetes.
Coffee increases a protein in the body called sex hormone-binding globulin (SHGB), according to UCLA researchers, reported Physorg.com. The protein moderates activity of the body’s sex hormones–testosterone and estrogen. Elevated levels of testosterone and estrogen are associated with the development of type 2 diabetes. “We now know that this protein, SHGB, is critical as an early target for assessing the risk and prevention of the onset of diabetes,” said Dr. Simin Liu, a professor of epidemiology and medicine at UCLA.
The team studied 359 diabetes cases against 359 apparently healthy people selected from among 40,000 women. Researchers found that those who downed four cups of coffee each day had drastically higher levels of the protein and were 56 percent less likely to develop diabetes than were non-drinkers.
