California County in State of Emergency After 6.0 Earthquake Strikes Napa Valley Region

A state of emergency is still in effect for southern Napa County after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay area of California in the pre-dawn hours of Sunday August 24.

Napa Valley winemakers were mopping up barrel upon barrel and bottle upon shattered bottle of spilled wine from the temblor, which may have caused millions of dollars in damage to California’s $13 billion wine industry, according to The Wall Street Journal. Seismologist David Oppenheimer of the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, California, told The Wall Street Journal that economic losses could top $100 million.

Although no one died, dozens were injured in the temblor, the largest in 25 years, the Associated Press said. The 3:30 a.m. quake took out power to tens of thousands of people and caused six “significant” fires that consumed four mobile homes, among other structures, Napa Division Fire Chief Darren Drake told the newswire.

“Sunday's quake was felt widely throughout the region, with people reporting its effects more than 200 miles south of Napa and as far east as the Nevada border,” the Associated Press said.

Tribes in California reported no significant damage, though they were monitoring events.

“Our prayers go out to the safety for Off-Reservation Hoopa Tribal Members and families during the Bay Area Earthquake,” wrote the Hoopa Valley Tribe on its Facebook page. “Please be safe.”
