Earth Hour Turns Out the Lights for Energy Awareness

Just before the end of March, a month before April’s Earth Day, much of the world went dark for an hour.

Under the motto “I will if you will,” people across the globe united on March 23 to save a bit of energy while raising awareness of the amount we consume.

The effort started nine years ago with one city and has since grown to 152 countries, including 7,000 cities and towns. Next Earth Hour is on Saturday, March 29, 2014, starting at 8:30 p.m. “wherever you are in the world,” as the Earth Hour website puts it.

The video medley below shows the phenomenon taking place all across the globe as humans everywhere united, putting up a common front of darkness against artificial light.

Below, see the Kremlin and Red Square go dark; Parliament, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace disappear, and watch the Sydney Opera House put on a vanishing show of its own. For more fun lights-out videos, click here
