Neal Chism, a sailor from West Seattle, has traveled down the Duwamish River about 90 times during the past 2-1/2 years, picking up debris along its banks, the Seattle Times reports.

Though the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is mulling over cleanup options for the water itself, the banks are still getting piled up with garbage. Read about Chism’s crusade against garbage and see the slideshow.

The Duwamish Tribe has been very active in helping clean up the river, as this 2006 story on the radio station KUOW details.

And the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition is soliciting public comment for its feedback to the EPA on the agency’s toxic cleanup plan for Boeing Plant 2, a major source of pollution. The building, the coalition points out, has already been demolished, and Boeing will pay for removal of contaminated mud.

“This is currently the river’s most toxic site, and its cleanup will be a huge step forward for the river’s cleanup and restoration progress,” the coalition’s website says. “Your comments are needed!”
