Flash floods swept through Keystone and Rapid City, South Dakota, after rain and wind pounded the Black Hills region in the wake of a record-breaking October blizzard.

Flash Floods in Keystone and Rapid City After Rain and Wind Pummel Black Hills Region

Floods inundated Keystone and Rapid City, South Dakota, on Friday October 11 after an overnight storm brought 60-mph winds and several inches of rain. Flooding was also rampant in the Black Hills, in what the Rapid City Journal called the “worst October snowstorm in the recorded history of the Black Hills.”

Rising water levels on Friday caused voluntary evacuations around Keystone, and the Red Cross set up shelters to take people in, the Rapid City Journal reported. Earlier today, people were urged to get to high ground immediately.

The region hadn’t quite finished digging out of the early-season blizzard that struck late last week, and the rain fell onto newly melted snow that had not drained yet. The Oglala Sioux have declared a state of emergency.

Livestock owners were totting up damages in the millions as Pennington County offered free burial assistance for the thousands of cattle that died in the rogue blizzard.

At least three inches of rain fell, KOTA Territory News reported, based on a measure sent to the station by a viewer and posted on the network’s Facebook page. KOTA also provided updates throughout the day on Friday. Meteorologist Brad Sugden posted numerous photos of the rushing waters on his station Facebook page as well.
