Fundraiser for Women Walking Length of Mississippi River

Two Ojibwe women are planning to walk the entire length of the Mississippi River to draw attention to the plight of Mother Earth’s water.

Elder Sharon Day, a peace activist and the executive director of the Indigenous Peoples Task Force, and her sister Doreen will begin the 2013 Mississippi Water Walk on March 1, walking from the headwaters in Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico, the organizers said. The Indigenous Peoples Task Force provides education on HIV as well as direct services to the Native community in Minnesota, according to the group's website.

A fund raiser for the women's endeavor is being held on February 19 at 6:30 p.m.

“A light supper will be served, we will enjoy the music of some very talented singers and Sharon will speak to us about the walk; why she is taking this action and how we can all act to protect this most precious resource,” the organizers said in a statement about the fund raiser. “Donations of any amount are most welcome and appreciated.”

More information is available at the walk’s Facebook page
