In the closing hours of August 29, President Barack Obama declared a major disaster exists for the Karuk Tribe as a result of a wildfire from July 29 to August 2.
Obama signed a disaster declaration ordering federal aid to supplement the tribe’s efforts in the affected areas.
Stephen M. DeBlasio Sr. was appointed the Federal Coordinating Officer for the federal recovery operations in the area by W. Craig Fugate, administrator for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Department of Homeland Security.
The declaration has made federal funding available to the tribe and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the wildfire.
Funding is also available to the tribe on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures.
