Spider Armband, by Kristen Dorsey (Chickasaw), $1,300.
This arm band was designed by Chickasaw artist Kristen Dorsey. The armband is an element of traditional southeastern regalia, which is still worn today by modern Chickasaw people. According to traditional stories, the spider brought fire to humanity but as a consequence, it forever carries a burnt mark on its back. This armband is one-of-a-kind and features a hand-carved and lost wax cast spider cast in sterling silver set with a red sapphire to symbolize fire. It is surrounded by a motif taken from ancient shell carvings symbolizing feathers.
Translator Tee, by Virgil Ortiz (Cochiti), $45.
This Limited Edition Translator Tee was designed by Cochiti artist and fashion designer Virgil Ortiz. Heavily sought out by celebrities, royalty, rock stars, and collectors alike, Ortiz is taking Native fashion to the next level. His designs are a captivating balance between the provocative, edgy, and traditional. In this tee, Ortiz brings forth the Translator, who emerges to communicate from a time and space encompassing the past, present and future spurring from events surrounding the 1680 Pueblo Revolt – The First American Revolution. On the inside back of each tee is a secret message printed for the wearer. (FATHER’S DAY BBB EXCLUSIVE OFFER – Buy 1 tee and get the second half off, or buy 3 tees for the price of 2. Enter code TRANSLATOR2 or TRANSLATOR3 at checkout. Mix and match sizes for father/son combos. Offer good June 4-17, 2012.)
Beaded Men’s Bracelet, by TSOul (Navajo), $27.
This Beaded Men’s Bracelet is brought to us by the brother and sister team TSOul. Drawing on their heritage and the colors of the Southwest, the Navajo duo creates cool beaded jewelry in various forms. This men’s bracelet features a three-dimensional beaded rectangle made with turquoise, red, yellow and orange seed beads in size 8 and 11, and ghost beads (juniper berries). Travis handles the business side while Kimbah is the artistic half. Kimbah is inspired by nature, classic Navajo rug designs, as well as mathematics and science – her undergraduate degree was in engineering, so elements of calculus, organic chemistry and physics inspire her to create three-dimensional shapes for her beadwork and jewelry.
