MASHANTUCKET, Conn. – A $1 slot machine turned out to be a treasure trove for a Foxwoods Resort Casino patron.
Sharon Kelly Parrella from Wilmington, Mass., hit a jackpot of $301,852.91 playing the $1 progressive slot machine called “Temple of Treasure” at the Grand Pequot Casino, Foxwoods announced in a release Jan. 31.
Parrella attributed her good fortune to fate.
“I go to Foxwoods three or four times each year, but I don’t usually even play the slots. I usually play blackjack – so it must have been fate,” she said.
Foxwoods, which is owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, gave Parrella the red carpet treatment after her win, providing dinner for her and a friend at one of the casino’s fancy restaurants and putting her up in one of the luxury suites at the Grand Pequot Tower.
“We at Foxwoods Resort Casino are thrilled for Ms. Parrella,” said Foxwoods Resort Casino and MGM Grand at Foxwoods Director of Public Relations Lori Potter. “Seeing our valued guests walk away with life changing winnings is extremely rewarding, and we couldn’t be happier for Ms. Parrella and her family.”
Foxwoods and MGM Grand at Foxwoods together paid out around $289,852,000 in jackpot winnings throughout the 2010 fiscal year.
The casino also pays out 25 percent of net slot revenue to the state through a tribal-state compact. The State Division of Special Revenue reported that slot revenue from Foxwoods and MGM Grand for the month of December was $45.1 million. This amount represents an increase of 1.2 percent in slot win and 6.3 percent in total slot handle as compared to December of 2009. The revenue yielded a $12 million payment to the State of Connecticut for December of 2010, bringing the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation’s total dollar amount given to the State of Connecticut to approximately $3.12 billion since January 1993, when slot machines were first introduced at Foxwoods.
Foxwoods is North America’s largest casino and is located in a rural area of southeastern Connecticut on the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation’s reservation. The resort destination has six casinos with more than 6,600 slots, 360 table games, 97 pokes tables and the only WPT World Poker room on the east coast.
