Freedmen Lecture at Bacone College

The Muscogee Creek Indian Freedmen Band Association will discuss the history and genealogy of the freedmen and their descendants at 5 p.m. on November 16 in Wacoche Hall at Bacone College, in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

According to the Muskogee Phoenix, “the freedmen were formerly held as slaves by members of the Five Civilized Tribes. After the Civil War, federal treaties with the tribes granted the former slaves rights as tribal citizens. Those rights as they relate to the freedmen’s descendant are part of an ongoing debate that is being litigated by the Cherokee Nation.”
