Gathering Of Nations

Starting April 28, the University of New Mexico will host The Gathering of Nations, one of the largest Pow Wows in the United States. Falling every fourth weekend in April for the past 27 years, the Gathering brings more than 500 tribes from all over the U.S. and Canada to compete in competitions such as dance, singing, drumming and the Miss Indian World competition. There are 32 dance categories alone, representing age groups from more than 70 to the Tiny Tots competition.

The Gathering of Nations is a registered nonprofit organization that contributes to the native community with a variety of funds generated from the revenue of the massive event, like the Academic Scholarship Foundation for Native American Students and the Indian Trader’s Market.

This Pow Wow to end all Pow Wows has garnered acclaim and interest in recent years; the music of the 2010 Gathering was captured on the Grammy-nominated album A Spirit’s Dance, while the American Business Association designated the Gathering one of the Top 100 events in North American for 2011.
