One of the largest pow wows of the Pacific Northwest is back when the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon are host the Competition Pow Wow over the weekend of Aug. 19-21. Once again the pow wow will take place at the Uyxat Powwow Grounds, located at 9390 Highway 22.
The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon includes 27 tribes and bands from western Oregon, southwestern Washington and northern California. These tribes were relocated to the Grand Ronde Reservation between 1855-1875. According to the Tribes press release, they were restored in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan. Their reservation lies due north of the unincorporated community of Grande Ronde, where their Spirit Mountain Casino opened in 1995 and became the largest employer in Yamhill and Polk Counties.
The Confederated Tribes include the Rogue River, Umpqua, Chasta, Kalapuya, Molalla, Salmon River, Tillamook and Nestucca Indians.
Hosts drums will be Blackstone, Seekaskootch and Cree Confederation. Registration begins at 5 p.m. Friday and Grand Entry and Royalty Coronations will be held at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, activities will begin with a parade at 11 a.m. followed by Grand Entry at 1 p.m. Dancer registration deadline will be at 2 p.m. with another Grand Entry at 7 p.m.
At 1 p.m. Sunday, the final Grand Entry will be held.
Prizes to be given out will range from $1,000 for first place to $25 for fifth place depending on the dance category. Specials – Women’s Traditional and Men’s Chicken Dance — will feature $800 for first-place finishers.
Master of ceremonies will be Hal Eagletail (Tsuu T’ina). Head judge will be Lara Ike (Yakama/Rock Creek Wasco) and Freddie Ike Jr. (Yakama/Rock Creek Wasco) will be the arena director.
