Granite Construction Seeks to Delay Liberty Quarry Vote

An August 25 letter from Granite Construction—the company that has proposed building a quarry in Riverside County, California—asks the Riverside County Planning Commission to postpone the scheduled August 31 meeting to September 21. The planning commission is scheduled to vote on the quarry at the August 31 meeting.

In the letter, Granite Aggregate Resource Manager Gary Johnson said they requested the postponement so they could “have discussions with the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indian Tribal leadership.” The company went on to say that “both Granite and Pechanga publicly committed to further talks in an effort to find a compromise solution to address Pechanga’s cultural concerns.”

The Press-Enterprise reported that no decision on the postponement could be made until the August 31 meeting. Tribal Chairman Mark Macarro told P-E that they were willing to keep dialogue open with Granite in the hope to relocate the mine. “As we have said repeatedly, we are not anti-development; we are not-anti-mine, we are certainly not anti-jobs since we are the second largest private employer in Riverside County,” Macarro said in a statement to P-E. “We are not even anti-Granite. We are, however, anti-annihilation of our one and only Creation Area.”
