In 2006, the Harley-Davidson Foundation awarded a $1 million grant to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization to support disabled veterans as part of its Harley’s Heroes program. In 2010, due in part to the success of the program, the Harley-Davidson Foundation made a second $1 million grant commitment to DAV.
Harley-Davidson says its dealers have raised more than $100,000 for DAV through dealer-driven fund-raising initiatives since 2007. These donations are used to expand DAV’s outreach services, including the Mobile Service Office program that has supported more than 74,526 veterans since 2007.
Disabled American Veterans offers a range of services for all veterans making the transition to civilian life. Veterans can also seek out the services of any of the DAV Mobile Service Offices to eliminate long trips Native veterans may have to make from rural communities.
Kevin Johnson is the owner-operator of the Harley-Davidson Dealership in Portsmouth, Virginia. “Our dealership hosts at least two annual events to benefit the Harley-Davidson Motor Company’s Harley’s Heroes program,” he says. “We are a military-friendly dealership, with many ties to local military installations, organizations and events. We are located within the largest concentration of military installations and personnel in the United States. We are a natural fit for the DAV, as many of our customers are veterans.” According to the DAV, 30 percent of Harley-Davidson customers are active or retired military veterans. Johnson adds: “We also invite the DAV to be on-site several times a year to assist military veterans, who may be disabled, to file their claim for benefits. We also have a donation box located at our facility when anyone can donate clothing or other necessities for disabled veterans.”
