Haudenosaunee Team Shows True Grit in World Lacrosse Championships

The Haudenosaunee Nation’s squad showed a lot of heart at the world girls’ under-19 field lacrosse tournament, facing some of the world’s toughest competition. This marked just the second time the Haudenosaunee Nation competed at this world tournament, the first being the 2007 championships in Peterborough, Ontario, where they finished sixth.

Because of its placing at the 2007 tournament, the Haudensosaunee Nation side was placed in this year’s elite division along with the top five finishers from the previous world event. In a field of twelve very tough teams, the Haudenosaunee team finished eighth.  Despite facing off against powerhouse teams with storied programs and tons of experience, the Haudenosaunee team fought tooth and nail with America, Canada, England and Japan to name a few opponents.

Its first match against Tawnie Johnson and her powerhouse Canada squad wasn’t pretty, and their game against Australia got worse, with a 21-0 loss. Refusing to quit, however, the team kept fighting, scoring 40 goals in their reamining games.
