HPV Vaccines not Monitored on Canadian Reserves

Researchers’ recent discovery that aboriginal women have higher rates of cervical cancer than the overall Canadian population has shed light on the fact that HPV vaccination rates are not monitored on reservations, the Winnipeg Free Press reports.

Although more girls in Manitoba are getting vaccinated against the human papillomavirus, which can cause cervical cancer, “nobody appears to be watching the vaccination rate on aboriginal communities despite rising concerns over cervical cancer rates for aboriginal women,” the newspaper reported recently.

Aboriginal women are three times more likely to develop cervical cancer than other Canadians, the Press said, and are four times more likely to die of it. Moreover, they may be susceptible to different strains of HPV.
