Personnel Security Consultants, Inc. (PSC), an American-Indian owned security firm located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has launched an art contest for Indian students from kindergarten to eighth grade. The firm will compile selected artwork drawn to the theme “What my Heritage Means to Me” into a calendar that will include tips on detecting child abuse and child safety for people working within American Indian communities.
The mission of the contest is two-fold, the firm said: to give children a voice and to aid adults in identifying child abuse in Native communities. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that 20 out of 1,000 American Indian/Alaska Native children are victims of abuse, compared to 10 out of 1,000 white children.
“We would like to empower the community to solve this crisis,” said Michele Justice (Navajo), PSC founder, president and chief executive officer. “We would also like to give children a voice because this is about protecting them and our future.”
PSC will release the calendar in November. The firm is preparing a week-long child abuse protection training workshop in conjunction with other safety workshops for November 6-12 during Native American Heritage Month. Proceeds from the workshops will benefit American Indian child abuse prevention programs.
PSC will honor the children whose artwork is chosen for the calendar at a dinner on November 7.
The deadline for submission of artwork is September 2. All finalists’ entries will be placed on PSC’s website for a vote September 5-9 for the calendar cover. For contest rules and entry forms, go to PSC’s website at www.pscprotectsyou.com.
